"Pregnant"

The sculpture "Pregnant" was created by Oleksandr Dyachenko in 1990 as an intimate dedication to the birth of his daughter. However, this is not only the artist's personal story, because the image of a pregnant woman in this work is archetypal (the one that lies at the heart).

The form is generalized, devoid of details. Smooth, soft lines outline the female body, the emphasis is on the belly - the source of birth. The absence of facial features focuses attention not on the personality, but on the essence. This is emphasized by the pose of calm and inner concentration. She embodies the cycle of life, which continues regardless of disasters or political changes.

The sculpture echoes the archetype of the Great Mother - an image that in different cultures symbolizes fertility, life and protection. The symbolism of the work also resonates with Ukrainian archaism: primarily with steppe stone women. The artist's interest in such motifs can be traced back to his youth, when he studied archaic exhibits at the Yavornytsky Museum.

"Pregnant" reveals the idea of inner fulfillment - not only physical, but also spiritual. This is a sculpture about the formation of life, the beginning of which is squeezed into a structured form. It appeals to the natural cycle: birth, the earth, the woman as the beginning. But at the same time it remains laconic.

It is timeless, as if rooted in the deep meanings of existence. As Dyachenko himself notes, “sculpture is a message to time.” And “Pregnant” is one of such messages, sincere, elegant, and strong at the same time.
