Motion pause

audio guide

Mykola Novikov's bronze sculpture "Pause of Movement" is a reflection on the need to stop as a condition for achieving something greater. The composition is based on the interaction of large volumes and expressive directions: the horizontal of the legs, the arc of the body, the vertical of the descent. In this construction, the author's principle of work is felt: understanding the form through the composition.
The plastic language is restrained and generalized. An important role in this was played by the initial material - chamotte, in which the first chamber version was created. Its properties limit the detailing, directing the work towards large planes and clear masses. This very limitation becomes a tool: the form is as if cleansed of excess and acquires integrity.
An important element is the hair, which becomes an independent plastic accent, enhancing the downward movement of the form and at the same time gathering the composition.
“Pause of movement” comprehends the state of stopping within continuous movement. A person seems to withdraw into himself, refusing external action in favor of internal work. In this sense, the work touches on bodily experience as a way of knowing. The body here does not illustrate movement, but captures a moment of concentration and rethinking. Pause is perceived not as a lack of action, but as the accumulation of potential for further development. That is why stopping here appears not as a weakness, but as a necessary condition for moving to a new level.
