“Birth of a Legend”

audio guide

Mykola Biryuchinsky's sculpture "The Birth of a Legend" is made of a monolithic block of granite. The composition is built on the contrast of the smooth lines of a human face, which seems to emerge from the stone, and the sharp, chopped edges in the upper and lower parts. They create a feeling of natural strength. The central image is a face directed upwards. Above it are carved dynamic wavy lines with geometric symbols in the form of triangles, which add metaphorical depth to the work.

Biryuchinsky uses techniques close to the archaic tradition of stone sculpture, where the human figure is not completely separated from the stone, but grows out of it, maintaining a connection with its natural form.

The symbolism of the work appeals to mythological ideas about the birth of a hero or prophet: the face, directed upwards, resembles ancient allegories of inspiration, and the wavy lines can be interpreted as the flow of time.
Thus, "Birth of a Legend" embodies the idea of the emergence of an image, where a face grows from primordial matter, like a legend from the memory of time.
