“The Bells of Victory”

"Victory Bells" by Ivan Bodnar is a symbolic art object created from 152 mm artillery shells that survived the war and were repurposed into bells. The upper part of each bell is made of brass and iron.

Shell casings, a symbol of destruction, here become musical bells; they are a memory and a prayer engraved in metal. This work is a cultural act that reminds us of the connection between generations, Ukrainian tradition, and unwavering faith in victory.

The three bells "Gabriel", "Michael" and "Raphael" in Ivan Bodnar's work carry a deep symbolic meaning, connected with the tradition of archangels in Christian culture.

Gabriel is the archangel of the Annunciation, the messenger of good news, a symbol of God's word and hope; in the context of this work, he personifies the message of peace and victory that is to come after the war, his bell sounds like a call to remember those who are waiting for the return of their loved ones.

Michael is the patron archangel of warriors and protector from evil; in many icons he is depicted with a weapon that defeats a serpent, symbolizing the fight against darkness. In the bell, this image is embodied as a voice of strength and invincibility, reminding us of those who are currently on the front lines.

Raphael is the patron archangel of healing and spiritual restoration, whose name translates as "God heals"; his call can be understood as a prayer for those who have received physical or spiritual wounds, as well as for the reconstruction of the country after destruction.

Together, these three bells form a coherent symbolic composition, where the message of peace, protection, and rebirth become the voices of a spiritual triptych, reminding us that victory is not only the end of battles, but also a shared new beginning.
