“Girl holding her chest”

audio guide

Oleksandr Sukholit often works with generalized, elongated silhouettes that resemble archaic plastic art, but at the same time retain the imprint of the author's hand — uneven texture, traces of modeling, and conventionality of details.

In the work “Girl Holding Her Breasts”, the figure is elongated vertically, with excessively thin limbs and a small torso, which creates a feeling of vulnerability and fragility. The hand touching the breast is a gesture that acquires a double meaning: both physical (self-defense, feeling of one's own body) and emotional (inner trembling, heartache or tenderness).

The surface has a greenish patina, typical of bronze castings, which gives the image an antique feel, as if it were an artifact from the depths of time.

In the context of Ukrainian art, Sukholit often works with the theme of man as a spiritual entity seeking harmony between the corporeal and the eternal. Here, the girl appears as a symbol of purity and fragility, but at the same time, inner strength.
