Boat of Hope

audio guide

Bohdan Korzh's sculpture "Boat of Hopes" is constructed as an elongated, gathered form resembling a boat. At the same time, its silhouette reflects the female body: the smooth line of the back, the raised torso, and the softly outlined volumes form the image of a pregnant woman.
The figure is made of travertine, a stone with a natural porous structure that retains traces of time and the process of formation. Against this background, the stomach, made of granite, a dense, homogeneous material of almost perfect shape, stands out clearly. This contrast enhances the feeling of a compositional center and focuses attention on the stomach.
The image of a boat is embedded in the very construction of the form. The elongated silhouette with the raised front part sets the direction and gives the sculpture an internal dynamic.
Since ancient times, the boat has been associated with the ability to preserve life and go its own way even in unforeseen circumstances. It personifies trust - in forces greater than man, and in the very process of being. In combination with the image of a pregnant woman, this meaning acquires concreteness. The female body appears as the source and space of the birth of life. Pregnancy here is not only an individual state, but part of an endless cycle: what is born inside, at the same time continues the previous one and becomes the beginning of the new.
That is why "The Boat of Hope" can be read as a symbol of the continuity of life. Hope here is not about waiting, but about knowing that it continues no matter what.
