“Berehynia — the birth of Ukraine”

audio guide

The sculpture "Berehynia - the Birth of Ukraine" by Petro Antip depicts a vertical female figure with elongated proportions standing on a stone pedestal. Her arms are spread to the sides, creating a horizontal accent, and her head is crowned with a stylized element resembling a solar disk.

In the lower part of the composition, near Berehynia, there is a smaller figure of a child with outstretched arms: a gesture of openness, joy and acceptance of the world. Both figures are created in Antip's characteristic generalized, almost symbolic manner, without facial details, but with a clear emotional expression in their poses.

The image of Berehyna resonates with Ukrainian mythology, where she appears as a female spirit-guardian of home, family, and land. Therefore, the child in the composition can be interpreted as a metaphor for a new Ukraine being born under the care of its foremother.

"Berehynia - the Birth of Ukraine" is an image of the foremother and the source of life from which the nation grows. The sculpture embodies the idea of the unity of generations: the past, which preserves traditions, and the future, which opens its arms to the world. In Antipa's work, Berehynia is not only a symbol of protection, but also a source of creation, a spiritual support, without which the existence of the people is impossible.
